PK 086+05.1 – Weinberger 1-10

PK086+05.1

PK 086+05.1, also known as Weinberger 1-10 (We 1-10) or PN G086.1+5.4, is a remarkably faint and highly evolved planetary nebula located in the constellation Cygnus (the Swan).

It is a relatively obscure deep-sky object, particularly challenging for amateur astronomers and astrophotographers because of its extremely low surface brightness. Despite its faint appearance, it is an interesting example of the final stages of stellar evolution and is an excellent target for deep narrowband imaging.

The nebula was first identified by astronomer Ronald Weinberger in 1977. It lies within the region of Lynds Bright Nebula 381 (LBN 381), making it part of a particularly interesting area of nebulosity in Cygnus.

However, its extremely low surface brightness, extended structure and faint outer OIII shell make it a particularly rewarding target for dedicated astrophotographers.

It is a reminder that some of the most interesting objects in the night sky are not necessarily the brightest or most visually impressive. They are often the faintest objects, requiring patience, long integration times and careful processing to reveal their true structure
